Help Your Son Develop into the Person God Created Him to Be

As the old nursery rhyme puts it, "snips and snails and puppy-dogs' tails, that's what boys are made of." This traditional verse points out what we all know intuitively—God designed male and female to function differently, which also means that men and women parent differently. These differences are intended to complement and complete each other. Ideally, children benefit from the balance that comes from having parents of both genders.

Among other things, this means that if you're a mom, you may need to resist the temptation to overprotect your son. As he develops masculine interests, look for opportunities to express confidence and affirm him. On the other hand, Dad, you'll want to carefully guard against pushing a boy into activities that don't fit his personality, just because you enjoy those things. Invest the time and energy into helping him discover his own unique interests, and then champion him as he learns to thrive in those pursuits.

Both parents should make an effort to get involved with hobbies, sports and pastimes that your son finds engaging and fun. Exploring these activities together will give a boy the time, security and encouragement he needs to develop into the person God created him to be.
