Have you ever heard one of your kids say "I feel stupid!"? Sooner or later, no matter our age, we will all struggle with understanding something—but that doesn't mean we're dumb, only that our minds are wired to process things differently. The question is not whether someone is smart, but rather how. A recent Focus on the Family® radio broadcast that listeners found particularly helpful is "Nurturing Your Child's Intelligence," featuring author and speaker Dr. Kathy Koch.
Drawing from her book How Am I Smart?—which is based on her work as a professor of educational psychology and reading—Dr. Koch explains that God creates everyone as a unique individual with eight intelligences or "smarts": word, logic, picture, music, body, nature, people and self. All of us have these characteristics in various strengths and combinations, which develop as we grow into the specially gifted person we're each made to be.
Dr. Koch explains how to identify your child's "smarts," and look for ways to encourage his or her growth. In addition to providing insights for educational settings, Kathy discusses how to recognize the ways that your kids can connect with Jesus as a result of their "smarts."
