Opioid overdose is a leading cause of death worldwide. Death rates from opioid overdoses doubled from 21,000 in 2010 to more than 42,000 in 2016 — mostly due to an increase of illegal synthetic opioids like fentanyl, which is 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine.
