Greetings friend,

I've again found myself looking through Tom Rath's book Strengths Finder 2.0. If you aren't familiar with the Strengths Finder it is an assessment tool that seeks to identify areas of strength which each of us possess and can capitalize on in our daily lives and work. I am moving through the book again because I find it is useful to occasionally take inventory of areas where I may be able to thrive in my own leadership. In my experience I have learned that it is important I take opportunities to read, reflect and think as often as possible for my betterment and the betterment of those whom I serve.

I recommend that every leader, be they in the local church or a business, serving in a paid position or a volunteer role, take time to advance their learning. Whatever your role, it is important to find time to continue growing and developing your abilities. Here are a few simple steps:

1.  Begin the day with prayer and scripture. Our time with God is ultimately what positions us to be productive in leadership.
2.  Read a good book. Identify books to read which speak to matters of interest in your own leadership.
3.  Continue your education. Participate in learning programs and/or communities where you are able to engage with other learners.

Serving as Executive Director of the Focus Leadership Institute™ of Focus on the Family, I am blessed to be a part of developing leadership resources for all ages. Our newest program, Advanced Learning Opportunities™ is now offering a leadership certificate in the area of Principle-centered Management. In the fall and spring, we invite participants to join us for a 3-day learning intensive here at Focus on the Family, then dive into 12-weeks of online study of practical management.

If you are interested in furthering your leadership skills in 12 weeks, visit FocusLeadership.org/ALO for more details.
